NOVEMBER IS FOUNDATION MONTH!

For the third year in a row, November has been designated as Foundation Month! Foundation Month is an opportunity for districts, local units and individual members of TRTA to learn more about our charitable activities.

Last year, through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and thousands of donors, the Foundation raised $74,000 for its three philanthropic programs: “A Helping Hand,” classroom assistance grants and student scholarships. This year, we’d like to raise even more! Our goal of $85,000 is attainable and made possible by the generosity of people like you.

In addition to local and district activities that will honor the Foundation, TRTF will mail its annual appeal letter to all members of TRTA in November. Please consider making a donation to TRTF and designating your gift for one of our programs.

Your donation will enable us to give $5000 in student scholarships, $5000 in classroom assistance grants and at least $10,000 in grants for “A Helping Hand” in 2012 (think of how many people we can assist with even more donations)!

DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT THE FOUNDATION THIS YEAR?

Last year at this time, the Foundation was launching its newest program “A Helping Hand” statewide. Since that time, TRTF has given nearly $15,000 in grants to individuals in critical need. Those grants include funds for eyeglasses, roof repair and much-needed medical prescriptions.

This year, the Foundation is partnering with TRTA on a new venture: the Legacy Campaign. As a TRS annuitant, you receive a lifetime annuity. As we learned during the 82nd legislative session, there are political groups working to pass legislation to eliminate defined benefit plans. Those groups are getting a head start in pursuing changes for 2013 and if successful, your lifetime annuity could be in jeopardy.

The Texas Retired Teachers Foundation values public education and its employees above all else. The legacy you leave behind as teachers and school personnel resonates with every child that has ever attended a public school in our great state. The value you provide is immeasurable. Your retirement, as well as the financial security of current and future educators, should be protected. We must begin now!

The funds gained through the Legacy Campaign will be used to create printed materials as well as a web site supporting defined benefit plans in Texas. These resources will be available for use by TRTA legislative staff and volunteers as well as any public education employee or retiree who wants to provide factual material to their legislators in defense of their long-term financial security. You can help by contributing a tax deductible donation to the TRTF Legacy Campaign.

UPDATE: We have raised $60,000 since November 1st!  Please help us reach $85,000 by December 31st!

“A Helping Hand”
“A Helping Hand,” the Foundation’s newest charitable program, launched statewide in October 2010! This is an exciting time for TRTF as we raise awareness of what we can do to help others.  Read about the first ever "A Helping Hand" recipient HERE!

Since February of 2010, TRTF has awarded $21,000 in grants from "A Helping Hand," all to Texas public education retirees!  So far, we have been able to assist retirees with medical and dental bills, as well as utility bills.  We were even able to provide funds for space heaters and groceries for an individual in the Houston area.

TRTF announces new e-newsletter, The Ledger
Recently, TRTF released its first electronic newsletter, which features updates and insights about the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF).  The Ledger opens communication between TRTF board members and the numerous volunteers who assist the Foundation statewide.

The Ledger is sent to district and local unit presidents, as well as district foundation liaisons and local unit foundation representatives.  If you are a foundation liaison or representative and are not receiving the e-newsletter, please contact Cindee Sharp at 1-800-880-1650x107 or info@trtf.org and provide her with your email address!  If you are not a foundation liaison or representative, but would like to receive The Ledger anyway, we will be happy to place you on the distribution list!

Why an e-newsletter?  The email format allows TRTF to save on expenses and better utilize the funds it raises for charitable purposes:  providing scholarships for students acquiring degrees in education, grants for Texas classroom teachers, and aid for retired school personnel in critical need.

Previously published Ledgers are available for download from our Resources page!
