TRTF announces new e-newsletter, The Ledger

Recently, TRTF released its first electronic newsletter, which features updates and insights about the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF).  The Ledger opens communication between TRTF board members and the numerous volunteers who assist the Foundation statewide.

The Ledger is sent to district and local unit presidents, as well as district foundation liaisons and local unit foundation representatives.  If you are a foundation liaison or representative and are not receiving the e-newsletter, please contact Cindee Sharp at 1-800-880-1650x120 or info@trtf.org and provide her with your email address!  If you are not a foundation liaison or representative, but would like to receive The Ledger anyway, we will be happy to place you on the distribution list!

Why an e-newsletter?  The email format allows TRTF to save on expenses and better utilize the funds it raises for charitable purposes:  providing scholarships for students acquiring degrees in education, grants for Texas classroom teachers, and aid for retired school personnel in critical need.

56th Annual TRTA Convention Update

Foundation Luncheon

The Texas Retired Teachers Foundation recently attended the 56th Annual Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) Convention in Dallas, Texas March 29-31.

On Monday, March 30, TRTF hosted a luncheon in Covingtons Ballroom at the Westin Park Central. The luncheon was attended by over 200 guests!

The 2009-10 student scholarship and classroom assistance grant winners were announced during the luncheon by trustee member LaVonne Rogers.  This year, TRTF awarded ten $500 student scholarships and four $500 classroom assistance grants!  The complete list of winners can be found at http://www.trtf.org/apply.htm

A signed copy of the book "Giving" by Bill Clinton was presented by Foundation Specialist Cindee Sharp to luncheon attendee David Saenz from the Harlandale-S. Bexar County ERA.   Mr. Saenz’s name was selected from a drawing containing the names of all luncheon guests.

Ms. Reba Kirby, a lifetime member of TRTF, was honored in a special presentation by trustee member Mike Lehr.

Unfortunately, TRTA Executive Director Tim Lee was unable to attend the luncheon as our guest speaker.  Tim was back in Austin, testifying before the Pensions, Investments, and Financial Services Committee on behalf of retired public educators to ensure the longevity and security of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas.

TRTF Board President Tom Pritchard spoke eloquently about the foundation’s goals and achievements, which resulted in a rousing display of generosity from luncheon guests.  Many came forward to present donations to the foundation in honor or in memory of TRTA members.  The gifts received will be used to support TRTF’s charitable programs: “A Helping Hand,” Classroom Assistance Grants, and Student Scholarships.

The TRTF Board of Trustees wants to extend a warm thank you to everyone who attended the luncheon this year.  We hope you enjoyed the occasion as much as we enjoyed having you there!

Special Donation Made to the Foundation in Memory of Jack C. Felts

During the 56th Annual TRTA Convention banquet, District XII presented a generous gift to the Foundation.  The gift was presented in memory of Jack Felts, who along with his wife Majorie Felts received the E.L. Galyean Service Award.  Anna Brodie, a member of District XII and a Foundation representative, presented the gift to Tom Pritchard, TRTF Board President.

The donation was made possible by the members of District XII, who gathered nearly $2500 for the Foundation.  This tremendous gift will aid TRTF in providing scholarships for college students, grants for public school teachers, and aid to retired school personnel for a one-time special needs or hardship.
